Chapter 6- Amy
I stayed over Samâs last night. Grams called up to Sam that morning, we were just waking up. Sam walked out of the room and I heard some commotion coming from down stairs. When I got to the top of the stairs, I saw Amy standing in the living room. She smiled and said hello to me before turning back towards Sam. Sam grabbed her hands and led her towards the stairs and I followed them. We all sat on Samâs bed.
âAmy, youâre back for good?â Sam asked squeezing her tight.
âFor two weeks, then I have to go back overnight to be evaluated and tested for alcohol. If I pass, Iâm good. I really miss Dyl, I have to spend time with him today, but I wanted to come see you first. I really missed you Sam. Vanessa, I missed you too you know.â She missed me? Wow, I was surprised. I was glad she was better now and back home. Sam seemed really happy also. For the next hour, Sam told Amy about Andy and how he left and moved to California. She didnât tell Amy about the party though, I knew why. If she told her she would flip out and Sam didnât want to deal with that now. She told Amy about her momâs letters and just then, Grams called me downstairs. She told me the phone was for me, it was Gwen.
âHello?â I answered.
âVanessa, hi. Are you coming home today?â Gwen asked. Home? That was the first time I heard that word out loud in a while. It felt really good to think I had a home.
âYeah I can.â Gwen sounded like something was bothering her.
âI would like to spend the day with you if thatâs ok?â Gwen said. I was a little nervous now because of the way her voice sounded.
âOk, Iâll be home soon.â I walked up the stairs, and Sam and Amy were sitting on the floor in front of Samâs bed. I told Sam that I had to go spend some time with Gwen and hugged her and Amy goodbye.
When I got home, Gwen was in the kitchen unpacking a shopping bag full of coffee, milk, eggs, bread and sausage.
She made us brunch, and while she was cooking she told me, âsomeone has contacted Pat, and I believe itâs a relative. They told Pat they wanted to see you.â
I didnât know how to react. Who could it be? I never met any other family when I was little. I remember my dad telling me that we didnât have any other family. âI donât want to see anyone, please. I am not comfortable with that.â I told her. I was scared.
âOk, Vanessa. You donât have to, but if you ever do, just tell me and I will contact Pat.â Gwen touched my shoulder and I started to clear our dishes.
âSorry Iâm at Samâs a lot.â I changed the subject.
âOh, itâs ok. Youâre a teenager, youâre supposed to be with friends all the time.
