Chapter 6- Amy

I stayed over Sam’s last night. Grams called up to Sam that morning, we were just waking up. Sam walked out of the room and I heard some commotion coming from down stairs. When I got to the top of the stairs, I saw Amy standing in the living room. She smiled and said hello to me before turning back towards Sam. Sam grabbed her hands and led her towards the stairs and I followed them. We all sat on Sam’s bed.

“Amy, you’re back for good?” Sam asked squeezing her tight.

“For two weeks, then I have to go back overnight to be evaluated and tested for alcohol. If I pass, I’m good. I really miss Dyl, I have to spend time with him today, but I wanted to come see you first. I really missed you Sam. Vanessa, I missed you too you know.” She missed me? Wow, I was surprised. I was glad she was better now and back home. Sam seemed really happy also. For the next hour, Sam told Amy about Andy and how he left and moved to California. She didn’t tell Amy about the party though, I knew why. If she told her she would flip out and Sam didn’t want to deal with that now. She told Amy about her mom’s letters and just then, Grams called me downstairs. She told me the phone was for me, it was Gwen.

“Hello?” I answered.

“Vanessa, hi. Are you coming home today?” Gwen asked. Home? That was the first time I heard that word out loud in a while. It felt really good to think I had a home.

“Yeah I can.” Gwen sounded like something was bothering her.

“I would like to spend the day with you if that’s ok?” Gwen said. I was a little nervous now because of the way her voice sounded.

“Ok, I’ll be home soon.” I walked up the stairs, and Sam and Amy were sitting on the floor in front of Sam’s bed. I told Sam that I had to go spend some time with Gwen and hugged her and Amy goodbye.

When I got home, Gwen was in the kitchen unpacking a shopping bag full of coffee, milk, eggs, bread and sausage.

She made us brunch, and while she was cooking she told me, “someone has contacted Pat, and I believe it’s a relative. They told Pat they wanted to see you.”

I didn’t know how to react. Who could it be? I never met any other family when I was little. I remember my dad telling me that we didn’t have any other family. “I don’t want to see anyone, please. I am not comfortable with that.” I told her. I was scared.

“Ok, Vanessa. You don’t have to, but if you ever do, just tell me and I will contact Pat.” Gwen touched my shoulder and I started to clear our dishes.

“Sorry I’m at Sam’s a lot.” I changed the subject.

“Oh, it’s ok. You’re a teenager, you’re supposed to be with friends all the time.
